The two multiple Italian champions plan to build a new stadium on the same site as the almost 100-year-old arena. The purchase price for the 28-hectare site, which also includes the parking areas, is approximately €200 million.
The decision in the municipal council was made after lengthy discussions in the middle of the night. 24 city councilors voted for the sale, while 20 voted against. The opposition considers the price too low. There are also protests because many associate memories with the stadium in the west of the city.
New building to cost 1,2 billion euros
Italy's largest football stadium (75.000 spectators) takes its name from the district in which it is located: San Siro. Officially, it was named after footballer Giuseppe Meazza (1910-1979), who played for both Milan and Inter. Next year—on his 100th anniversary—the stadium will host the opening ceremony for the 2026 Olympic Games in Milan and Cortina (February 6-22).This is what the new San Siro will look like. © ANSA / HANDOUT
The 2032 European Football Championship, which Italy is hosting together with Turkey, is also scheduled to be played in Milan. However, the matches will be played in the new stadium, which will be more modern but also somewhat smaller: a capacity of 71.500 spectators is planned. Opening is scheduled for 2031. The two major Milanese clubs also intend to share the new stadium. The cost is currently estimated at around €1,2 billion. It is being designed by the architectural firms Foster + Partners and Manica.
