Marco Zaffaroni is the successor of Federico Valente as head coach of FC Südtirol. The 49-year-old Italian-Swiss was on Monday after the 0-1 defeat in Cesena (it was the 5th in the last 7 games). The White-Reds have agreed a contract with the coach until June 30, 2025, which will automatically be extended for another season in the event of relegation.
Zaffaroni is starting his third Serie B stint in Bolzano. Last year he took over at a similar time at Feralpisalò and was relegated with the Lake Garda team. In the squad then and now: Luca Ceppitelli. His first coaching stint in Serie B was also not a success. After 3 points from 1 games at Cosenza, he had to make way for Pierpaolo Bisoli, who ultimately managed to avoid relegation, something that was thought impossible.
three-man defense as the preferred system
Zaffaroni celebrated success in Serie D, where he brought Monza back into professional football in 2017 and then to 4th place in Serie C. The Lombard then moved to Albinoleffe (2019 to 2021). Between the two Serie B engagements there was an interlude at Hellas Verona in Serie A. There he was the head coach on paper, but on the pitch Salvatore Bocchetti (who lacked the necessary license for Serie A) was in charge. In the end, the team stayed in the league.Zaffaroni, like his predecessor Valente, will probably play with a three-man defense. Feralpisalò always played in a 3-5-2 formation last year and he also played with this system when he was coach at Cosenza.
