Before the derby: Simon Greif reveals Tramin's secret to success

Football South Tyrol is looking forward to this duel: On Sunday, Oberliga leaders Tramin will meet runners-up St. Pauls - the ancient derby par excellence, which has a very special aftertaste this year because of the table constellation. What does Tramin's captain Simon Greif say about this?

Already on Wednesday we met with Paulsner Captain Hannes Ohnewein with regard to the derby spoken on Sunday, now it's his Traminer counterpart's turn. Simon Greif has been a figurehead for his Unterland team for years and, with his class and charisma, he is one of the best midfielders in the league. The Traminer, who turns 37 this year, spoke to us about the upcoming derby on Sunday from 15 p.m. - but not only.

Tramin in first place, St. Pauls in second place, and on Sunday there will be a duel that is perhaps the most traditional derby in all of South Tyrol. It's a bit crazy, isn't it?

Simon Greif: “Very special, that’s true! The derby alone would be special enough, but this constellation makes it even more explosive. It's a great thing that two such traditional clubs are so far ahead in the table. After the first half of the season (5:2 for Tramin, editor's note), St. Pauls will certainly be looking for revenge; they are also on a great run, are unbeaten in the second half of the season and are playing at home. But we’re not first for nothing and we’ll definitely try to win.”

“Almost all of our games are played by players from our own village – that’s really awesome.” Simon Greif

You have played many derbies against St Pauls yourself. Is there one that particularly stands out in your memory?

“If I could choose one, it would be the one from the first half of the season. Our Alex Pfitscher scored five goals in one game – that was crazy.”

Tramin is a phenomenon. Although some well-known players left last summer, the team has gotten even better. What is the secret of success?

“I was already convinced before the season that we would get into the top five because the quality of the players is simply great, including among the boys. What's also special about us is that almost all of our team are players from our own village, which is really amazing. The foreigners also fit perfectly into the team, we are like a family. Something like that can make a big difference.”
“We’re enjoying the moment.” Simon Greif

Another question that you have probably heard often in the last few weeks: Would Tramin even want to be promoted to Serie D?

“We have been first in the championship for three games, something that has never happened before in history. We are therefore enjoying the moment and now want to win the derby. What is most important to the club is that many local players get a chance.”

You will be 37 years old this year. Will we still see you on the field next season?

“I haven't thought about that yet. It may be that I continue playing because I feel good, the club and the team are great and the desire is still there. But it could also be the last season. I still have to decide.”
