Tyrolean football legend Didi Constantini is dead

Former Austrian team manager Dietmar Constantini died on Wednesday night at the age of 69. Red-white-red football, especially that in North Tyrol, is in deep mourning.

Constantini died after a long illness, further details are unknown. The death was reported by the Tiroler Tageszeitung and other media, there has been no confirmation from the ÖFB yet.


Five years ago, Constantini and his family announced that they were suffering from dementia. Since then, he has largely withdrawn from public life. He leaves behind two children.

A life dedicated to coaching

The Innsbruck native was one of the greatest coaching icons in Austria for decades. He coached the ÖFB selection twice as interim coach, and from 2009 to 2011 he was on the sidelines of the national team as head coach for 23 matches.

Constantini has also coached FC Tirol, Austria Wien, Admira, FC Kärnten and Pasching, among others. The former Innsbruck champion player also coached the then German second division team FSV Mainz for one season in the 90s.
