With South Tyrolean power: Wacker Innsbruck rises

With a healthy dose of South Tyrolean power, Wacker Innsbruck won the championship title in Austria's 4th division this weekend. This means the North Tyroleans are promoted to the Regionalliga West.

Wacker Innsbruck is one of the most traditional clubs in Austria and remains number one in North Tyrol – at least in terms of attendance. Around 1 spectators celebrated the championship title in the Regionalliga Tirol, Austria's fourth division, at the Tivoli Stadium on Friday. A 3500-4 victory over Völser Sportverein preceded the championship celebration.

For Innsbruck, the championship title marks the end of a long period of suffering. In 2022, Wacker attempted a fresh start after its umpteenth defeat. Supported by politicians and investors (and partner club Los Angeles FC), the club is aiming for a return to professional football in the medium term. WSG Tirol, a club from North Tyrol, currently competes in the Bundesliga.

South Tyrolean power for Wacker Innsbruck

Not only Wacker fans in North Tyrol have reason to celebrate, but also those south of the Brenner Pass. Firstly, there's the fan friendship with Obermais, who recently welcomed several guests from Innsbruck to their home games. Secondly, there are two important building blocks for the championship from South Tyrol: Adrian Lechl and Fabian Lantschner.

While Natz's Lantschner serves as head coach Sebastian Siller's right-hand man as assistant coach, Lechl is the star of the attack. The 20-year-old from Lüsen came from the FC Südtirol youth team and has been playing in Innsbruck since 2023. This season, Lechl has been one of Wacker's top performers, scoring six goals in 23 appearances.

Double as a goal

For Wacker Innsbruck, the season isn't over just yet, despite the championship title. Firstly, the league season finale is still on the agenda, and secondly, there's a chance to win the double. On Whit Monday, Lechl & Co. have the chance to win the TFV Cup. The final will take place against Innsbruck's local rivals SVG Reichenau.

For Wacker's multicultural team (11 different nationalities are represented in the squad), winning the cup would be a first, as Innsbruck has never lifted the TFV Cup before. If statistics are anything to go by, a cup victory is only a matter of time. Wacker Innsbruck has been unbeaten for 562 days (!).

It's great that Wacker is back on the rise! The rise and, above all, the fan support are simply impressive! It would be exciting to consider an even closer cooperation between FC Südtirol and Wacker!
