European record set: Bayern remain flawless

Bundesliga fans were treated to a lot this Saturday. While FC Bayern Munich set a European record, Leipzig outclassed Augsburg. Borussia Dortmund, on the other hand, secured a late victory.

FC Bayern continued its flawless winning streak and celebrated a European record. The Munich team beat Borussia Mönchengladbach 3-0 and consolidated their lead in the Bundesliga with their eighth victory. Across all competitions, Bayern even managed 13 wins in 13 matches – only AC Milan managed such a start to a season in the major European leagues in the fall of 1992.

The match was anything but easy for Munich: From the 19th minute, Bayern were playing with a man advantage, as Jens Castrop was sent off for a heavy foul on Luis Díaz. Nevertheless, the visitors struggled surprisingly hard against ten Gladbach players. Joshua Kimmich broke the deadlock (64th minute), and shortly afterwards Raphael Guerreiro doubled the lead (70th minute). When, to make matters worse for Borussia, Kevin Stöger hit the post with a penalty (75th minute), the match was practically over. Bayern youngster Lennart Karl put the final touch on the game. After coming on as a substitute, he fired a beautiful long-range shot into the top corner (81st minute).

Augsburg suffers historic home defeat

In Augsburg, Leipzig left no doubt early on that they were clearly winning. After goals from Yan Diomande (10th minute), Romulo (18th minute), Antonio Nusa (22nd minute), and Christoph Baumgartner (38th minute), the game was over. The curious thing about it: The home side were essentially dominating the game – but at the same time, they also made some serious errors. RB Leipzig simply had to wait for slip-ups and then pounce on counterattacks. Assan Ouedraogo (56th minute) and Castello Lukeba (65th minute) added to the lead.

Dortmund narrowly avoided a minor setback: DFB-Pokal pro Maximilian Beier secured the win with his goal in the sixth minute of stoppage time. The match was ultimately overshadowed by an injury to FC Bayern Munich's Timo Hübers: TV footage showed the defender severely injuring his right knee in a challenge. He had to be stretchered off the field by paramedics.

Frankfurt reaction after Liverpool setback

Frankfurt suffered their share of frustration this week, losing 5-1 to Liverpool in the Champions League. But the Hesse side shook themselves off and celebrated against St. Pauli. Jonathan Burkardt scored a brace (36th and 56th minutes), profiting from defensive blunders by Hamburg for both goals. Meanwhile, Hoffenheim secured their first home win of the season: Fisnik Asllani (18th minute), Tim Lemperle (45th+2 minute), and Andrej Kramaric (63rd minute) scored against bottom club Heidenheim. Stefan Schimmer's goal was not enough to bring them back in the 75th minute.

HSV were actually superior to Wolfsburg, who had been struggling for weeks. Yet, in the end, it was the visitors who celebrated. Adam Daghim took advantage of the home side's defensive instability (15th minute). Goalkeeper Kamil Grabara secured the victory, including a penalty from Ransford Königsdorffer (45+1).
