Fan death overshadows Leipzig's cup victory

RB Leipzig's ultimately comfortable qualification for the DFB Cup quarter-finals was overshadowed by the death of a fan. As was the case after their second-round victory in Cottbus, a spectator who had to be resuscitated outside the stadium later died in hospital.

After falling behind against second-division strugglers 1. FC Magdeburg, the Bundesliga side turned the game around and advanced to the quarterfinals with a 3-1 victory over the Magdeburg team. Silas Gnaka (11th minute) put the visitors ahead with a penalty, before Antonio Nusa (19th) and Christoph Baumgartner (30th/54th) turned the game around at the Red Bull Arena.

"We were all looking forward to a great cup night under the floodlights. Now it's overshadowed by sad news. We regret to inform you that the 1. FC Magdeburg fan who had to be resuscitated before the match has passed away in hospital. We are saddened and our deepest sympathies go out to his family," RB Leipzig announced.

Borussia Dortmund suffered a nasty setback. After a weak performance, BVB lost 1-0 to Bayer Leverkusen in the DFB Cup round of 16. Coach Kasper Hjulmand's team thus avenged their 2-1 defeat in the Bundesliga top match just three days earlier. Ibrahim Maza (34th minute) scored the winning goal for Leverkusen, sending them into the quarterfinals.
