It was the 49th minute when Kevin Müller took flight in the six-yard box, attempting to punch a cross from Bernardo out of the danger zone. The FC Heidenheim number one collided with VfL Bochum's Ibrahima Sissoko – and remained motionless. Tim Siersleben and Jan Schöppner immediately rushed to their goalkeeper's aid, recognizing the emergency. Without hesitation, they placed Müller in the recovery position and ensured that the goalkeeper, who, according to TV images, had sustained a head wound in the collision, did not swallow his tongue.
In the minutes that followed, Müller was treated on the pitch of Heidenheim's Voith Arena, with several staff members shielding the area with a large tarpaulin. About ten minutes later, Müller was stretchered off. Both sets of fans, who had by then fallen into shock, chanted his name and applauded Müller and the helpers on the pitch. The match, which was crucial for the relegation battle, was subsequently resumed with the score at 0-0. There is currently no further information on Müller's condition.
Bochum avoids early relegation
No more goals were scored that evening, however, as Heidenheim and Bochum played out a goalless draw. VfL, currently bottom of the table, thus maintained its chances of staying up. Before their clashes with European Cup contenders FSV Mainz 05 and newly promoted FC St. Pauli, VfL remains four points behind Heidenheim and the relegation play-off spot 16.The collision between Kevin Müller and Ibrahima Sissoko. © ANSA / RONALD WITTEK
FCH declared relegation as their goal for the season months ago. In their second ever Bundesliga season, the club from the Ostalb region will face 1. FC Union Berlin away and Werder Bremen at home.
