Death drama involving young Spanish goalkeeper

A young football goalkeeper in Spain was declared brain dead two days after a collision with an opponent.

The family of 19-year-old Raúl Ramírez has decided to donate his organs to help others in need, the Cantabrian Football Federation (RFCF) announced. Three days of mourning have been declared for the entire region in northern Spain, according to the statement.

Ramírez was in goal for Spanish fifth-division club Club Deportivo Colindres. The tragic collision occurred on Saturday during his club's match against SD Revilla. According to consistent media reports, neither party was at fault. According to doctors, the goalkeeper suffered severe traumatic brain injury and multiple cardiac arrests.

“A young man full of life, full of dreams”

The match was abandoned with the home team leading 1-0. Ramírez was immediately taken to the intensive care unit of the Valdecilla University Hospital in the regional capital of Santander, where doctors were unable to save him despite all their efforts.

The regional president of Cantabria, María José Sáenz de Buruaga, expressed her deep sadness: "A young man full of life, full of dreams, and a full future. My condolences and those of Cantabria go out to his family, his friends, and the entire Cantabrian football family."
