Explosive return of Xabi Alonso to Liverpool

Xabi Alonso has a very special match in the Champions League on Tuesday (21 p.m.). The coach of Bayer Leverkusen is returning to his former playing place in Liverpool.

"Playing in the Champions League at Anfield - it's hard to be better," said the 42-year-old. From a sporting perspective, the task could hardly be more difficult, the Reds are the only team besides Aston Villa in the "premier class" without losing a point.

Liverpool are also in strong form nationally under coach Arne Slot, and are at the top with 25 points after eight wins, one draw and one defeat. The most recent success on Saturday with a 2-1 win against Brighton and Hove Albion was hard work, but it was achieved nonetheless. "They are one of the best teams in Europe right now," said Alonso.

Alonso directed Liverpool's midfield between 2004 and 2009. So there is more than enough material for the images that will probably flash before the eyes of Alonso when he returns to England. He could have even returned sooner, because if media reports are to be believed, he was at the top of Liverpool's list of coaches in the summer. At the time, LFC were looking for a successor to Jürgen Klopp, and the name Alonso was a natural choice. In the end, however, he decided to stay with the Werkself.

Liverpool are hot on their heels in the league and the CL, as are Manchester City. The team around star striker Erling Haaland is visiting Sporting in a duel between two unbeaten teams. Monaco are lurking behind them in fourth place with the same number of points and are playing against Bologna. Coach Adi Hütter's team must stop a negative trend of two league defeats in a row. Bologna only has one point in the Champions League. Real Madrid are aiming for victory number three at home against Milan. Slovan Bratislava is fighting for the first point against Dinamo Zagreb.
