The two opponents already fought a close battle in the first two encounters. The Austrians emerged victorious each time, taking a 2-0 lead. Early Saturday evening, Salzburg extended their lead and now have one foot in the final.
The visitors started the match with a fair amount of nerves and immediately received several penalty minutes. In the 7th minute, the Pinzgau team took advantage of their second power play and took a 1-0 lead. Although the Broncos had a bit more of the game after that, they failed to create any big chances. This changed in the middle period: Zell am See appeared increasingly nervous and had to play shorthanded several times, but the Broncos were unable to capitalize on the many opportunities they had. Things really got bitter in the 33rd minute when Aljaz Predan made it 2-0 for the Austrians during the Wildpferde's strongest phase of pressure.
The South Tyroleans started the final period with an extra man on the court, but nothing came of it. The Eisbären improved a little later when Eisendle and Hackhofer both took their places in the ice and scored to make it 3-0. The Wild Horses did respond, reducing the deficit with three minutes left through Bryson Cianforne, but Predan's goal into the empty net sealed the Wipptal defeat. The game continues on Tuesday with Game 3 in Sterzing. Kickoff is at 4:20.00 PM.
