“Unfortunate run”: South Tyrolean looking for a club

A few months ago, Gianluca March was battling for promotion to the Swiss top flight with HC La Chaux-de-Fonds. But now the Leiferer suddenly faces an uncertain future.

On Tuesday, play began in both the first and second Swiss leagues. Gianluca March, who played defense for EHC Winterthur for the past two seasons and transferred to HC La Chaux-de-Fonds in early February of this year, was missing from the roster. "It all went unluckily," the 28-year-old explained to SportNews.

March had signed a contract with the club from western Switzerland until the end of the season – and promptly won the cup final on his first appearance. Ultimately, however, the contract was not extended.

Everything is still open

"I was in contact with numerous teams all summer and was always close to reaching an agreement. Ultimately, however, I didn't get a deal at the level I was looking for," March emphasizes. "Now I'm still looking."

One thing is certain: South Tyrolean clubs will be following developments closely, especially since local defensemen are scarce and therefore in high demand. In his career, March has made 36 appearances in the ICE Hockey League (ICEHL), 65 games in the Swiss lower division, and 215 games in the Alps Hockey League (AlpsHL). He also made eight appearances for the national team.
