Spengler Cup: The host team is in the final

At the traditional Spengler Cup in Davos, the host team reached the final on Tuesday evening. The team from Graubünden narrowly defeated Fribourg-Gottéron in the semi-final.

The world's oldest ice hockey tournament entered its 97th edition this year. It was already clear after the group stage that neither Helsinki nor record holders Team Canada would be in contention for the tournament title. Both teams were eliminated on Monday against Sparta Prague and Davos, respectively.

The semifinal was an all-Swiss affair between HC Davos and Fribourg-Gottéron. In a game that was evenly matched for long stretches, the National League leaders prevailed, winning 3-1 after 60 minutes.

In the second semifinal, the College Selects caused an upset. The team from the NCAA, the American college basketball league, defeated Sparta Prague 5-3 and reached the final in their first tournament appearance. On New Year's Eve, the College Selects will face Davos in the final at 12:10 PM. Davos lost their group stage match against the Americans 3-5 three days ago.
