Formula 1 returns to Portugal

Formula 1 returns to the race track in Portimão, Portugal.

The Grand Prix series has announced that racing will return to the Algarve circuit in 2027 and 2028. The Portuguese Grand Prix will then replace the Zandvoort circuit in the Netherlands, whose contract expires after the upcoming season.

Portimão hosted Formula 1 races in 2020 and 2021, when European venues were prioritized during the COVID-19 pandemic. Lewis Hamilton, then driving for Mercedes, won both races. Portugal also hosted Formula 1 races in Porto, Monsanto, and Estoril.

“The interest in hosting a Formula 1 Grand Prix is higher than ever before,” said Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali. South Africa, Thailand, and South Korea had also recently been mentioned as possible candidates for the race calendar in the coming years.
