Dutchman Verstappen in the Red Bull was 39 thousandths of a second faster than Thai driver Alexander Albon, who finished second just ahead of his Williams teammate Carlos Sainz. The practice session was not very informative, partly due to poor grip conditions. World Championship leader Oscar Piastri finished only 14th, one second behind.
Piastri is ten points ahead of his McLaren teammate Lando Norris in the World Championship. The Australian has won five of the nine races so far and has finished on the podium eight times in a row.
Leclerc demolished his Ferrari
Charles Leclerc started the weekend with a crash. The Monegasque lost control of his Ferrari and, after a braking error, crashed into the barriers so hard that the front and rear suspension on the left side broke. The wrecked car is being removed. © APA/afp / GEOFF ROBINS
"That was my mistake. I hit the wall," said Leclerc. The cleanup took about ten minutes before the track was reopened. The Monegasque was unable to continue after that, but his fastest lap up to that point was enough for the tenth-best time.Edit Profile
