Barcelona: mass crash in the 1st round

The MotoGP race in Barcelona started on Sunday afternoon with an orgy of crashes. After only 2 corners, the race management waved the red flag - the race was interrupted.

Pole man Francesco “Pecco” Bagnaia (ITA/Ducati) got off to a perfect start from the 1st row of the grid and drove safely into the 1st corner. Behind them - triggered by Enea Bastianini (ITA/Ducati) - the drivers Alex Marquez (ESP/Ducati), Johann Zarco (FRA/Ducati), Fabio Di Giannantonio (ITA/Ducati) and Marco Bezzecchi (ITA/Ducati) cleared each other away.

Then the shock: World champion Bagnaia produced a so-called highsider (fall headfirst over the handlebars, editor's note) when exiting turn 2. Shortly after hitting the asphalt, the 26-year-old was hit by Brad Binder (RSA/KTM ) run over on the legs. Bagnaia remained injured and conscious. It is not yet known how serious the injuries are.

After the interruption of almost 30 minutes, the race was restarted - without Bagnaia and Bastianini. Aprilia driver Aleix Espargaro took victory.

At the time of the accident, Francesco Bagnaia was leading the championship standings by 66 points over Jorge Martin (ESP/Ducati).
