Marquez gets the World Championship match ball

MotoGP dominator Marc Marquez celebrated his eleventh victory in the 16th race of the season at the San Marino Grand Prix and can become world champion in two weeks.

The Spanish Ducati rider made an impressive comeback on Sunday after his retirement in the sprint the day before, taking the win in Misano ahead of pole-sitter and sprint winner Marco Bezzecchi (Aprilia) and his brother Alex Marquez (Ducati). With a 182-point lead over Alex Marquez, Marc Marquez has his first World Championship match point at the next race in Japan.

"Today I gave it my all. Yesterday's mistake was bothering me. I wanted to push him and forced him into a small mistake. That was very important for Ducati," said Marquez, referring to his Italian team's home race. The six-time world champion increased his points tally to 512 points, the most any MotoGP rider has ever collected in a single season.

In front of Formula 1 rising star Kimi Antonelli, Marquez worked his way up from the second row. He dueled with pole-sitter Bezzecchi for a long time before the Italian was forced to let the season's dominant rider pass after a mistake. The best KTM rider at the final race weekend in Europe was South African Brad Binder, who finished tenth. Teammate Pedro Acosta delivered a strong race from ninth on the grid, fighting his way up to fourth before being forced to retire due to a technical failure. The Spaniard was full of annoyance.

After the race in Misano, which, as announced on Sunday, will remain on the MotoGP calendar at least until 2031, the race continues in two weeks in Motegi, Japan.
