Also in Germany: MotoGP attracts the masses

It's one of the greatest cult tracks in international motorsport: the Sachsenring. This year, around 250.000 fans will once again flock to the track to cheer on the great world championship leader Marc Márquez.

Márquez arrives in great spirits at one of the most popular races on the racing calendar: the Sachsenring. "When I come here, I smile more than usual," says the eight-time motorcycle world champion ahead of the eleventh round of the season. Many fans, who flock to the track in their tens of thousands every year, make the event one of the biggest single sporting events in the country, probably feel the same way.

And this despite the fact that for the second year in a row, no German star is competing for victories, nor is even a local hero competing in any of the three World Championship classes. How can this enthusiasm be explained?

Why is the race weekend so attractive?

In 2017, just under 165.000 spectators flocked to the track. This number has grown dramatically over the years. Last year, 252.826 visitors were counted – the previous record. In addition to the three World Championship classes, two junior series will also be presented.

Among other things, a charity run took place on Wednesday. Many drivers stop by the go-kart arena at the Ring, giving interviews and signing autographs. There's an air show, a stunt show, and in the past, Bundesliga soccer club RB Leipzig has also used the weekend to showcase its team during its summer break.

How successful are ticket sales this year?

The organizers are once again satisfied with advance ticket sales this year. "Demand and enthusiasm for the Motorcycle Grand Prix remain high," says Voss. "In recent years, the box office has always been quite strong. If the weather is right, we might set a new record again."

What are the future prospects for the Grand Prix in Germany?

The current contract ends in 2026. However, an extension until at least 2031 is expected shortly. "It looks very promising. We are more or less in agreement," ADAC Sports President Dr. Gerd Ennser told the BILDNewspaper. Only a few details remain to be worked out. "Personally, I'd bet that we'll see each other again at the Sachsenring in 2027," the official said.

Who will be the favorite in the premier class going into the weekend?

World Championship leader Marc Márquez isn't called the "King of the Ring" for nothing. Essentially, the Spaniard can only beat himself in the sprint on Saturday (15.00:14.00 p.m.) and in the main race on Sunday (1:XNUMX p.m., both on DFXNUMX and Sky) – especially since his closest rival, his younger brother Alex, is struggling after a heavy crash.
