Pole surprise in Spielberg

Italian Aprilia rider Marco Bezzecchi surprisingly won the MotoGP qualifying for the Austrian Grand Prix in Spielberg on Sunday, ahead of three Ducati riders.

Top favorite Marc Marquez crashed in the final stages on Saturday, remained uninjured, but could only finish fourth on the grid. Francesco Bagnaia and his brother Alex Marquez finished ahead of the series winner, who was 16 thousandths behind Bezzecchi. Bezzecchi will start a Grand Prix from pole position for the first time since 2023.

The best KTM rider was Enea Bastianini in fifth place. His Tech3 teammate Maverick Viñales will have to sit out the rest of the weekend due to a recurring shoulder injury.
