Crash, restart, drama: surprise victory at Silverstone

Marco Bezzecchi surprisingly won a turbulent MotoGP race at Silverstone and celebrated his first victory of the season.

The Italian Aprilia rider triumphed at the British Grand Prix on Sunday, ahead of Frenchman Johann Zarco (Honda) and Spanish World Championship leader Marc Márquez (Ducati). The KTM riders trailed in an eventful race, with Pedro Acosta finishing sixth.

Immediately after the start, sprint winner Alex Márquez crashed in the first corner while leading, and on the second lap, his brother Marc Márquez also crashed. Because an oil slick posed an increased risk, the race was red-flagged. The Márquez brothers were allowed to rejoin the starting grid in their original order at the restart, as less than three laps had been completed.

Drama Quartararo just before the end

Pole-sitter Fabio Quartararo defended his lead and pulled away from the field. Behind him, double world champion Francesco Bagnaia crashed on lap four. With seven laps to go, the dominant leader, with victory in sight, had to retire due to a technical defect.

Bezzecchi inherited the victory, his fourth in MotoGP and his first in 609 days. After the seventh race of the season, Marc Márquez now leads the World Championship by 24 points, ahead of his brother, who finished fifth. Bagnaia is already 72 points behind.
