Tragedy at rally race: Young Italian dies

Italian sport is in deep mourning: a young rally driver from Pordenone has died in a terrible accident.

This news has deeply impacted Italian motorsport: Matteo Doretto, a 21-year-old talent from Pordenone, lost his life in a racing accident in Poland on Wednesday. According to local media, the tragedy occurred during a test drive for the 81st edition of the Orlen Rally.


According to initial information, the Italian pilot left the road and crashed into a tree. Doretto sustained fatal injuries. His co-pilot was taken to the hospital but is not in critical condition.

A great motorsport talent

Doretto, 21, came from a motorsports-mad family; both his father and grandfather were once drivers. The young man possessed great talent and was crowned Italy's Junior Rally Champion last year.



Three weeks ago, Doretto caused a stir again when he finished third in a junior race in Hungary. "I'm proud to be on the podium at such a prestigious race," he wrote on Instagram at the time. Now Matteo Doretto has had to give up his life for his great passion.
