Lukas Bicciato and the love of racing

It all started with karting and later with car slaloms. Lukas Bicciato was racing even before he got his driver's license. The trained mechanic watched his father many times and wanted to try it himself. "I built my racing car myself, and over the last 10 years I've also built my father's racing cars," says Lukas.

Long journey to the races Since the winter of 2018, Bicciato Junior has also competed in races of the Italian and Austrian ice championships. The season that has just ended was by far the most successful. The Überetscher took part in the European Hill Climb Championship. 10 races were on the program for 2024. It went right across Europe. "We also had to go to Portugal and the day after we returned we went back to work," says the racing driver. Hill climbs are like a drug for him. Lukas explains: "They are short, intense. You don't know the routes or hardly know them, a lot of things are new. There is little time to train. You have to memorize the route exactly, learn all the sections by heart." The European Hill Climb Championship comprised 10 races, namely in Austria (Rechberg), Spain (Subida al Fito), Portugal (Rampa da Falperra), Czech Republic (Sternberk), Germany (Glasbach), Italy (Vallecamonica), Poland (Limanowa), Switzerland (St. Ursanne), Slovakia (Bistrica) and Croatia (Buzetski Dani).

In his Renault Clio 4 Evo, Bicciato won 5 races, took 4 second places and finished 3rd once. He entered the last race 7 points behind the leading Hungarian Norbert Nagy and won it. Both secured the European Championship in Group PF179 (touring cars) with 5 points each. Bicciato finished 4th in the overall standings. The winner was Croatian Matija Jurisic.

moment of shock with total loss Five years ago, Bicciato also had a moment of shock. "In 5, I rolled over. It happened in Belluno and the car was a total write-off. Nothing happened to me. I learned from that and now I drive with my head. Being fast is important, but you also have to finish," says Bicciato.

Without a passion for racing, nothing works. Luckily, a mechanic (who also acts as a chauffeur) accompanies Bicciato to the competitions. Financially, Bicciato also has to dig deep into his own pockets. Although hillclimb racing is still fairly manageable. The adrenaline level is extremely high. Bicciato: "With my car, I can reach speeds of up to 220 km/h and the fastest racing cars can even reach 300 km/h. At the start, you are really tense, you are shaking and then you reach the finish line at a rapid pace."

Overall victory is the goal This year's European Championship success has given Lukas Bicciato additional motivation. He wants to go all out in 2025: "I'm aiming for overall victory, this year I already came fourth in the general rankings." It will be a big challenge, but with this love of racing you can move mountains.

Lukas Bicciato and the love of racing

Lukas Bicciato inherited his love of racing from his father Rudi (who is still active today). The 28-year-old from Eppan won the European Hill Climb Championship this year ex aequo.
