Barbara Gambaro takes part in the Olympic Games.

Olympia is no longer a dream: Gambaro travels to Paris

What has been hinted at for two weeks is now certain: Barbara Gambaro will take part in the Olympic Games in Paris.

Late Thursday evening, the association confirmed that Gambaro is the only Italian sports shooter to qualify for the 2024 Olympics in Paris (26 July to 11 August). The 32-year-old from Schlanders is the third South Tyrolean to travel to the Olympic Games in that sport, after Edith Gufler (1984) and Petra Zublasing (2012 and 2016).

This was possible because several quota places became available. According to the daily newspaper Dolomites Gambaro will be shooting in three disciplines in Paris: three-position shooting, air rifle and mixed team. On July 28, the Vinschgau native will begin qualifying for the air rifle final. This will also be her Olympic debut.

South Tyrolean Olympic squad

Gambaro is after Jannik Sinner (Tennis), Simone Giannelli (Volleyball), Verena Steinhauser (Triathlon), Giorgia Piccolin and Deborah Vivarelli (both table tennis) is the sixth South Tyrolean to have secured her ticket to Paris. Sinner and Giannelli, who are among the absolute world leaders in their respective sports, naturally have the best chances of winning a medal.

Gambaro's best chance of a top placing is certainly in the mixed team competition. At the last competition in Munich, she finished sixth with Edoardo Bonazzi. A total of seven Italian sports shooters have qualified for Paris, with Gambaro being the only woman.
