After the World Cup: Qatar also wants the 2036 Summer Games

Qatar has reaffirmed its ambitions to host the Summer Olympic Games in eleven years in the capital Doha.

“We believe in the unifying power of sport – in its ability to build bridges between cultures, inspire young people and unlock societal potential,” Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, Chairman of the National Olympic Committee, was quoted as saying by the state news agency QNA.

The bid for the Olympic and Paralympic Games is "an expression of a national vision that sees sport as a driver of development and peacebuilding," it continued. Qatar had already positioned itself similarly as the host of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, a controversial move in parts of Europe.

Many comrades

Competition for 2036 is likely to be fierce. Former IOC President Thomas Bach spoke of a double-digit number of applicants. India and Qatar, in particular, are considered favorites for the next bid, while Indonesia, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia also have Olympic plans. Egypt and South Africa could attract potential first-ever Games on the African continent.

Qatar would be the first Olympic host in the Arab world. It will "open a new chapter in Olympic history: an Arab hosting model that embodies diversity, openness, and a sustainable legacy," the emirate said.
