Gymnastics talent briefly awakened after shock of fall

The serious fall of Italian gymnast Lorenzo Bonicelli overshadowed the FISU World University Games. Now there is an update on his health.

"His family is with him and his teammates visited him," the Italian Gymnastics Federation wrote in an official statement. Although Bonicelli remains in the intensive care unit at Essen University Hospital, the 23-year-old's life is not in danger. "Lorenzo opened his eyes yesterday because the doctors temporarily lifted the induced coma to check for irreversible neurological damage," said Luis Cavalieri, the Italian Consul General in Cologne. "Fortunately, that doesn't seem to be the case. However, there is extensive edema that has formed in the area of the spinal cord and needs to resolve first."


Bonicelli was seriously injured on Wednesday during the qualification in artistic gymnastics at the World University Games in Essen. During an exercise on the rings, he lost control and fell on the neckHe then remained motionless on the mat, but according to the association, he never lost consciousness before being sedated by the medical staff. Journal of Sport According to reports, Bonicelli was placed back into an induced coma following post-surgery examinations. Another positive sign: the gymnast is breathing independently.

Teammates stay with Bonicelli for the time being

"Lorenzo is a very serious young man with great empathy for others," said Paolo Gilardoni, president of Bonicelli's club, Ghislanzoni GAL. The official immediately traveled to Germany after the tragic incident to support his protégé. "He is someone whose joie de vivre is contagious. A hard worker, talented, and smart—that's why he is the undisputed captain of our club. We can hardly wait to embrace him again."

Bonicelli's teammates want to stay close to their comrade at least until Sunday, only then will they plan to leave.
