EM: Mixed feelings for Vivarelli and Piccolin

On Thursday afternoon, Giorgia Piccolin and Debora Vivarelli from Bolzano started the individual tournament at the European Championships in Linz.

Piccolin (28/WR 69) beat the German Sophie Klee (WR 235) 4:1 (11:7, 11:9, 11:3, 6:11, 12:10). The Romanian Andreea Dragoman (WR 99) awaits in the next round this Friday.

The 31-year-old Vivarelli, on the other hand, suffered a surprise defeat to the great Hungarian Bernadett Balint (WR 459) 1:4 (11:9, 7:11, 9:11, 7:11, 9:11). A Herculean task would have awaited her today against the strong Frenchwoman Jia Nan Yuan (WR 18).

The South Tyroleans played their first match in the doubles main draw in the morning. Vivarelli and the Englishwoman Tin-Tin Ho lost 1:0 (3:7, 11:7, 11:5) to Izabela Lupulesku/Sabina Surjan from Serbia. Piccolin and her doubles partner Nicole Arlia faced the number 11 seeded pair Maria Xiao and Adina Diaconu (Spain/Romania). The "Azzurre" also lost 1:0 (3, 8, 5).
