No Italian women's doubles pair has won a Grand Slam title since 2014. Back then, Roberta Vinci and Sara Errani triumphed on the hallowed turf of Wimbledon. The latter, along with Jasmine Paolini, had another chance to win a major title at the French Open on Sunday, after losing in the final a year ago on Court Philippe-Chatrier. This time, they faced Aleksandra Krunic of Serbia and Anna Danilina of Kazakhstan.
After a highly intense and thrilling final, the cries of joy from the two Italians echoed through the midday Parisian air. Errani and Paolini won the French Open final 2.16-6, 4-2, 6-6 after 1 hours and XNUMX minutes and deservedly embraced each other.
Changing dominance
Errani and Paolini played as usual at the start: composed, clever, and with plenty of pace. In the first set, the two Azzurre clearly set the tone, skillfully putting their opponents under pressure at the net and establishing a perfect starting position by winning the first set. With their usual positivity and fighting determination, they took control early on and won the first set 6-4.Paolini (left) and Errani (right) are a well-rehearsed duo. © APA/afp / THIBAUD MORITZ
But then Danilina and Krunic, who were competing together in only their third tournament, found their way back into the game. Suddenly, the two Eastern Europeans varied their style of play, increasingly putting Errani, in particular, under pressure. The 38-year-old veteran wavered, made unfamiliar errors, and repeatedly sent her feared lobs out of bounds. Two lost serves led to the set being tied.
Furious third movement
In the third set, the Azzurre – buoyed by Paolini's energy – rose again. The world No. 4 in singles remained focused, consistently hitting hard, and carrying her partner back up with her. Her opponents' resistance was broken right at the start with a break. After that, the Italians were unstoppable, sweeping their opponents 6-1 from the red clay in the French capital.Krunic (left) and Danilina (right) were powerless in the third set. © APA/afp / THIBAUD MORITZ
While it was Paolini's first ever Grand Slam victory, Errani, who completed her Golden Slam by winning the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, celebrated her sixth triumph at major tournaments - for the first time in over ten years.
