Sabalenka wins her 8th WTA 1000 title in Miami

Aryna Sabalenka celebrated her eighth victory at a WTA 1000 tournament in Miami on Saturday.

The world number one from Belarus defeated fourth-seeded American Jessica Pegula 7-5,6, 2-19 in the final, winning the trophy without dropping a set. It was her second title of the season after Brisbane and her XNUMXth career title overall. She had never previously advanced beyond the quarterfinals in Miami.

This is Pegula's third loss to Sabalenka in a final: She also lost in Cincinnati and then at the US Open last year. Sabalenka, on the other hand, was unwilling to leave with the smaller trophy after missing out on the finals at the Australian Open (winner Madison Keys/USA) and most recently in Indian Wells (Mirra Andreyeva/RUS).

"Thanks the rain stopped. For me, it felt like Miami was crying because I won the tournament," joked the 26-year-old. Her opponent was upset about losing the final hat trick. "Three finals—I don't really want to like you right now," Pegula said with a laugh. "But you're the best in the world for a reason."
