Zverev in the round of 16 in Miami

After initial difficulties, Alexander Zverev reached the round of 1000 at the Masters XNUMX tournament in Miami.

The 2021 Olympic tennis champion won his third-round match against Australian Jordan Thompson 7-5, 6-4 in Florida. Zverev (27) converted his second match point after 1.27 hour and 1 minutes. "I'm very happy with my level," Zverev said after the match. "Jordan made it difficult for me at the beginning, but from 4-XNUMX down, I reached a good level."

Zverev is attempting to find his old form in Florida. The Hamburg native recently suffered bitter defeats in Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, and Acapulco, and was also eliminated at the opening round of the Masters 1000 event in Indian Wells.

Zverev always feels very comfortable in Miami. "Miami is one of my favorite cities in the USA," he said before the tournament. "I just love being here."

Weak start

After an easy opening win against Briton Jacob Fearnley, Zverev initially struggled against Thompson. The world number two dropped his first service game and was initially trailing. But then the number one seed improved, scoring two breaks of his own and taking the first set after 47 minutes.

Zverev now had the match under control. In the second set, he immediately broke the Australian's serve and headed toward victory with little danger.

In addition to Zverev, Casper Ruud, Francisco Cerundolo, and Tomas Machac also advanced to the next round. Matteo Berrettini will play against Belgian Zizou Bergs later this evening (CET).
