Shelton beats Sonego and reaches the semifinals

Ben Shelton has reached the semifinals of the Australian Open for the first time and could face Jannik Sinner there. Defeated Lorenzo Sonego returns home with his head held high.

The US tennis player won his quarterfinal against Italian Lorenzo Sonego 6:4, 7:5, 4:6, 7:6 (7:4). At the age of 22 years and 109 days, Shelton is the fifth youngest US player to reach the round of the best four in Melbourne.

In a thrilling match, with spectacular rallies and constant back and forth, Shelton was more hardened in the decisive moments. For Sonego, however, the Australian Open ended with a feeling of success. He moved up 20 places in the ATP world rankings to number 35. Four years ago, Sonego was already number 4 in the tennis world.

Shelton, on the other hand, will continue in Melbourne and will face the winner of the quarter-final between defending champion Jannik Sinner and Australian local hero Alex de Minaur in the semi-finals.
