The next blow for Matteo Berrettini

Just recently, Matteo Berrettini had to withdraw from his home tournament in Rome due to injury. Now the Italian has to cope with another setback.

Berrettini expressed his regret over the decision to withdraw from the 2025 French Open in an Instagram post. The Roman explained that he had been fighting a "battle against time" to regain his physical fitness and compete at the highest level, but didn't feel ready yet. Incidentally, Berrettini last competed in the only Grand Slam clay court tournament in Paris four years ago.

Berrettini also announced that he will now focus on preparing for the grass-court season. The now 29-year-old celebrated his greatest success on that very same surface in 2021, when he reached the final at Wimbledon, losing to Novak Djokovic in four sets.

Since then, however, Berrettini has repeatedly struggled with physical problems. In Rome, he had to withdraw—once again—due to an abdominal muscle injury. As he left, Berrettini fought back tears. In the world rankings he has now slipped from 6th place to 28th place.
