World ranking: Alcaraz on the rise

The new tennis world rankings were published on Monday, and Carlos Alcaraz made a leap forward in them.

Jannik Sinner has been ranked No. 10 in the world since June 2024, 1, and will remain so until at least June 16, 2025, that is, until the first grass-court tournament of the season in Halle. First up for Sinner and his team, however, is the French Open. This tournament begins for the tennis elite at the beginning of next week and runs until June 8.

Sinner has thus maintained his top position for at least a year—and will likely do so for longer. This is all the more remarkable considering that the 23-year-old was suspended for three months during that time. But Alexander Zverev and Alcaraz were unable to take advantage of his absence.

After his tournament victory in Rome, Alcaraz has at least overtaken Zverev in the world rankings and has been second since Monday. The Spaniard has also held the top spot in the past. To achieve this, however, he will need Sinner's consistency in the future, which is truly remarkable and decisive in the world rankings. As the defending champion, Alcaraz will have to defend many points at the French Open, while Sinner reached the semifinals last year.

Musetti and Paolini strong

After reaching the semifinals in Rome, Lorenzo Musetti is in eighth place on Monday. The Italian had never been that far ahead before. In the women's competition, Aryna Sabalenka remains firmly in the lead. Behind her are the two Americans Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula. Jasmine Paolini overtook Iga Swiatek and is now fourth after her victory in Rome.
