A hundredth-of-a-second thriller is brewing in Sölden

Unlike the women's race on Saturday, when Julia Scheib won by a large margin, the men's race looks set to be a close one. Swiss Marco Odermatt leads at halftime.

A short giant slalom (the start was moved downhill due to fog) with a run time of under a minute, plus a thriller that came down to a hundredth of a second, and many of the usual suspects leading the way. That's the short summary of the first men's World Cup run of the new ski season.

In Sölden, Marco Odermatt (SUI) leads by a narrow margin of one hundredth of a second. Two Austrians, Marco Schwarz and Stefan Brennsteiner (+0,25), are hot on his heels. Giant slalom specialist Thomas Tumler (+0,58/SUI) is lurking in fourth place, followed by Norwegian Henrik Kristoffersen (+0,73). His compatriot Lucas Braathen, who is racing for Brazil, has dropped out.

The Azzurri had nothing to do with the top positions in the first run. Luca De Aliprandini (18th/+1,70) and Alex Vinatzer (21st/+1,78) from Selva were the best. Giovanni Borsotti (28th/+2,35) is another Italian who qualified for the final.
