In December 2024, Marcel Hirscher tore his cruciate ligament during giant slalom training on the Reiteralm, ending his much-anticipated comeback adventure after a five-year absence after just three races – at least for the time being. In the following months, the now 36-year-old worked hard to be able to compete in the World Cup again. In an Instagram post, Hirscher has now hinted at his return. However, his fans will have to wait a little longer.
“A smooth progress, the precision is returning,” wrote the eight-time overall World Cup winner under a video showing him during slalom training, adding: “I’ll be back in January.” Hirscher was conspicuously absent from both the season opener in Sölden and the trip to Levi, Finland.
According to his statement, the Austrian, who competes for the Netherlands, is not expected to return to competition until the World Cup in Madonna di Campiglio (January 7th) at the earliest. A few days later, the Adelboden races are on the schedule – a venue he has fond memories of, having stood atop the podium there nine times.
