In the end, local hero Brignone, whose hometown of La Salle is just half an hour from the World Cup venue, prevailed by a hundredth of a second. The 34-year-old thus celebrated her first home victory in La Thuile. At the finish, both Goggia and Brignone had to smile at the hundredth-of-a-second thriller.
Goggia had already lost to Emma Aicher the day before by just 5 hundredths of a second. The successful Italian has been waiting for a win for over two months. Third-placed Romane Miradoli of France also lost just 5 hundredths of a second to Brignone on Friday.

Lara Gut-Behrami finished fourth again. This puts the Swiss skier five points behind Brignone in the Super-G World Cup. The Aostanian celebrated her 5th World Cup victory this winter. Interestingly, five years ago, Brignone was beaten by a hundredth of a second in her home race. Now the tables have turned.
Brignone wins the big crystal ball
With a lead of well over 300 points over Gut-Behrami, Brignone also secured the overall World Cup title on Friday. Since neither the Swiss nor the Italian are competing in the slalom, they each have only three races remaining. Thus, Brignone wins the big crystal globe for the second time after 2020.Federica Brignone (right) is the best female skier of the winter. © APA/afp / MARCO BERTORELLO
South Tyroleans Vicky Bernardi, Nicol, and Nadia Delago all missed the points. Nicol Delago fell and suffered bleeding from her face. The Val Gardena native appears to have suffered no injuries and, after a short break for treatment, crossed the finish line herself. The Women's World Cup continues next weekend with the speed races in the finals venue of Sun Valley (USA).
