Italian ski ace dominates race in South America

The first World Cup race of the new season for the ski stars will take place in Sölden in a month and a half. But one Italian is already in remarkable early form.

Italy's top skiers are currently preparing for the upcoming winter in South America. Dominik Paris is working on his form with his teammates in El Colorado, Chile, while speed ace Sofia Goggia is training in Ushuaia, Argentina. Two giant slaloms took place there over the past two days, both won by Goggia's teammate Asja Zenere.

The 28-year-old, whose best result in the World Cup is eleventh place, prevailed against top-class competition on Monday. Zenere relegated Katharina Liensberger, who has already reached the giant slalom podium in both the World Cup and the World Championships, to third place. The Austrian lost just under a second to the winner. Behind Zenere, teammate Lara Della Mea finished second. Emma Wieser, a South Tyrolean, also competed. Emma Wieser from Ratschings, representing Germany, finished 24th.

Zenere unrivaled

24 hours later, Zenere repeated the feat. Second place this time went to 20-year-old Swiss talent Sue Piller, with Della Mea completing the podium half a second behind.

Wieser finished the race in 22nd place. The South Tyrolean is aiming for an improvement on Wednesday and Thursday, when two slaloms are scheduled, especially since she is rated higher in this discipline. Read here how the South Tyrolean's change of nationality came about.
