The athlete from Ticino received this diagnosis on Wednesday after examinations in Switzerland. The third-place finisher in the giant slalom in Sölden in October will not compete in any races this winter and therefore will miss the Olympics. The 34-year-old left open the question of whether she will end her career as planned at the end of the season.
The Olympic Super-G champion will undergo knee surgery next week. "I had imagined the next few months very differently and was really looking forward to the rest of the ski season. We have recently experienced dramatic events in our sport, fatal accidents involving young athletes. I believe that a knee injury, however complex it may be, cannot be considered a tragedy," Gut-Behrami is quoted as saying in a press release from Swiss Ski.
First she wants to get fit, then decide
She is keeping her sporting future open: “My goal is to fully recover from this injury and regain my full performance level. Only then will I know what the future holds for me.” Women’s head coach Beat Tschuor sympathizes with Gut-Behrami. “The Winter Olympics in her second home, Italy, were Lara’s last major career goal. This serious injury is all the more bitter for that reason.” Her absence is, of course, a significant blow; the team will miss her not only as an athlete but also as a person during the Olympic season.Edit Profile
