Odermatt as a party crasher in Beaver Creek

Marco Odermatt won the first downhill race of the new season in Beaver Creek. The Swiss skier finished ahead of a local favorite.

Under bright sunshine and occasionally strong winds, Odermatt won his third race of the season on Thursday in Beaver Creek, following his giant slalom victory in Sölden and his Super-G win in Copper Mountain. The 28-year-old is once again the clear favorite for the overall World Cup title – it would be his fifth consecutive win. Odermatt had previously won the Super-G three times in the US state of Colorado – and now, for the first time, he also took the downhill title.

Starting with bib number 11, "Odi" overtook the then-leader Ryan Cochran-Siegle by three-tenths of a second. The 33-year-old American thus missed out on his second World Cup victory at his home race. Cochran-Siegle's only previous World Cup win came four years ago in the Super-G in Bormio. Incidentally, the last victory for an American in the Beaver Creek downhill dates back to 2011 – when Bode Miller won.

Norwegian Adrian Smiseth Sejersted completed the podium on the "Birds of Prey" course. Swiss rising star Franjo von Allmen finished fourth. Dominik Paris, with a strong lower section, managed to finish sixth. The 36-year-old from Ultental, who has only been on the podium once before in Beaver Creek, faltered at the top. Florian Schieder from Kastelruth finished 14th. The third South Tyrolean, Christof Innerhofer, missed out on points.

Program changed

Due to the recent snowfall, the downhill race has been shortened by approximately 15 seconds. The schedule for the coming days has also been changed. The Super-G will now take place on Friday evening (7:15 p.m.) instead of Saturday as originally planned. A giant slalom will then be held in Beaver Creek on Sunday (6:00 p.m./9:00 p.m.).
