Pirovano and Franzoni shine at the Italian Championships

Giovanni Franzoni and Laura Pirovano have won their next gold medals at this year’s Italian Championships.

After silver in the downhill and gold in the super-G, Franzoni has now also been crowned Italian giant slalom champion. The 24-year-old from Manerba on Lake Garda was in a league of his own on Friday, beating the two runners-up, Tommaso Saccardi and David Leonardo Seppi, by 1,31 seconds. South Tyroleans Hannes Zingerle (4th), Simon Maurberger (6th), and Tobias Kastlunger (10th) also had no chance against Franzoni in Alpe Lusia (Fassa Valley).

In the women's race, Laura Pirovano, after winning gold in the downhill, also won the Super-G at the San Pellegrino Pass. The 27-year-old from Trentino left Elena Curtoni and Nicol Delago from Val Gardena in her wake. Delago lost just under a second to Pirovano. Sara Thaler finished eighth.

Giovanni Franzoni also became a two-time Italian champion.

The big topic at the Italian Championship, however, was the serious injury of Federica Brignone, who spoke out for the first time on Friday. On Saturday, the title fights in Trentino will conclude with the slaloms.
