Platino is out: South Tyrolean share continues to shrink

Elisa Platino has had a truly horrific season. Now the Merano native is paying the price, as her name is no longer on the national team for next winter.

It's no surprise that Elisa Platino is no longer part of the Italian national ski team. The 26-year-old didn't even make it into the points rankings last winter. Even during the World Cup season She spoke of a “mysterious crisis” and seemed perplexed.

Platino now has to organize everything herself for the coming winter, as she can no longer rely on most of the national team's resources. Since Wednesday, it has been confirmed that the Merano native is no longer part of the Azzurre. However, Platino remains a member of the Carabinieri sports group, which also provides its athletes with advice and support. An eventful summer certainly awaits Platino if she wants to fight her way back into the World Cup this Olympic winter.

Only two South Tyroleans in the World Cup team

Nadja and Nicol Delago are the only two South Tyrolean athletes on the Azzurre's World Cup squad. Both are assigned to the speed group, overseen by Giovanni Feltrin as head coach. The technical team, a very young group, is under the direction of Roberto Lorenzi. Vicky Bernardi (Abtei), Teresa Runggaldier (Selva), and Sara Thaler (Ortisei) are three other local athletes on the European Cup team, where they can qualify for the World Cup.

The Olympic year is all about special support for top female athletes. Although Federica Brignone is still out indefinitely after her serious injury, three other Italian athletes, Marta Bassino, Sofia Goggia, and Elena Curtoni, are receiving special support from coaches Luca Agazzi, Thierry Marguerettaz, Giorgio Pavoni, and Brignone's brother, Davide.
