Before the start of the season: shock for Italy's ski team

The new Ski World Cup season begins on Saturday with the women's giant slalom in Sölden. Shortly before the start of the winter season, Marta Bassino suffered a serious injury in Schnals.

Only a week ago, slalom specialist Marta Rossetti tore her cruciate ligament on the Leo Gurschler piste in the Schnalstal valley, Now Marta Bassino has injured herself practically on the spot: The 29-year-old from Cuneo slipped on a flat section and fell. According to the Italian Winter Sports Federation (FISI), Bassino suffered a fracture of the tibial head of her left leg.

This was diagnosed at the Merano hospital. Bassino will undergo another CT scan in the coming hours to determine the exact extent of the injury. Following this, the FISI Medical Commission will decide, together with the athlete, how to proceed.

Olympics in danger?

In any case, it's feared that Bassino will be out for a few weeks. Even her participation in the Olympic Games could be in jeopardy. After a disastrous past season, the Piedmont native actually wanted to make a fresh start this year and switched equipment suppliers (from Salomon to Head) in the summer.

Bassino won a total of seven World Cup races in her career. She was also crowned World Champion twice. Following Federica Brignone's injury, Bassino's injury is the next major blow for Italy's women's team. The new season begins in Sölden in three days. This is Italy's squad.
