American woman fights for Olympics after fall

The Olympic Games in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo begin in less than a month. Time is running out for one American athlete, as she has injured herself in training.

This weekend, the women's Ski World Cup speed weekend takes place in Altenmarkt-Zauchensee. One athlete will be missing: Isabella Wright. As the 28-year-old announced on social media, she crashed during training and has to take a break from racing.

"I'm dealing with a few new injuries," the American writes. "We have a tight schedule ahead of us, but I'm doing well. I'm working hard to get back to doing what I love most as soon as possible. We have work to do and something worth fighting for," Wright concludes her message.

The speed specialist didn't go into detail, so it's unclear what injuries she sustained in the training crash. Setbacks are nothing new for Wright. After a serious crash in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in January of last year, she was sidelined for two months before having to end her season prematurely due to a torn labrum in her right hip.

Wright has a good chance

Wright is currently the fourth-best American in the downhill standings and can therefore realistically hope to participate in Cortina d'Ampezzo. It would be Wright's second Winter Olympics, after finishing 21st in the Super-G and failing to finish the Alpine Combined in Beijing in 2022. This season, her best result so far is a 13th-place finish in the downhill in St. Moritz.
