Untouchable: Robinson outclasses the competition

Alice Robinson made a clear statement in Copper Mountain. She won the second giant slalom of the season by a huge margin and celebrated her fifth World Cup victory.

Last season, Alice Robinson was only beaten by Federica Brignone in the battle for the Giant Slalom Crystal Globe – and stood on the podium every time she crossed the finish line. After finishing eighth in the opening race in Sölden, the lively New Zealander returned to this winning form on Saturday in Copper Mountain (USA). She started the second run with a 0,29-second lead, kept her composure, and ultimately extended her advantage to almost a second with another fastest run. Sölden winner Julia Scheib from Austria finished second, while Norway's Thea Louise Stjernesund secured third place.

With treacherous shifts in light and shadow at the top and the course completely in shadow from the middle section onward, conditions in the US state of Colorado were certainly not easy. Added to this were the nearly 3.000 meters of elevation gain, which presented an additional challenge for the athletes. But neither the difficult conditions nor the pressure of leading at the halfway point threw Robinson off her rhythm. With another strong run, she once again laid down a top time. In the end, the scoreboard showed a lead of 0,96 seconds over the Austrian Scheib – for the New Zealander, this meant her fifth World Cup victory.

Scheib moved up to second place after her triumph in Sölden, thus retaining the red jersey as the discipline leader. Stjernesund secured third place with a small comeback from fifth, beating Sarah Hector (+1,17/4th), Camille Rast (+1,41/5th), and Lena Dürr (+1,44/6th).

Shiffrin's comeback attempt failed to materialize.

Mikaela Shiffrin likely started her second run at her home race with a lot of frustration. Her 18th place after the first run was far from what she had hoped for. Although she showed improvement in the final run, the big breakthrough – the hoped-for comeback that fans and probably her partner Aleksander Aamodt Kilde had been waiting for at the finish line – failed to materialize. Shiffrin gained four places and ultimately finished fourteenth (+2,08).

Even the Azzurri, so accustomed to success last season, had to settle for smaller achievements this time – such as that of Asja Zenere, who finished ninth (+1,78) with a strong second run, securing a place in the top ten. Sofia Goggia finished 17th (+2,38), and Lara Della Mea came in 27th (+3,24).
