Normally, Ragnhild Mowinckel would be starting to get excited at this time of year. In less than four weeks, the new World Cup season begins with the giant slalom in Sölden. The Norwegian all-rounder often competed in the Ötztal Alps, and even came fifth once. But this year, you won't find the name of the two-time Olympic silver medalist on the start list: she ended her career last spring.
Mowinckel still had butterflies in her stomach last weekend, because the 32-year-old celebrated a dream wedding. Not in Norway, however, but in Italy. In the exquisite Castello di Montignano in Umbria, Mowinckel said "I do" to her long-time boyfriend and fiancé Mathias Tangenes.
Not only family and friends celebrated the romantic wedding, but also some ski stars. Joana Hählen, Kajsa Vickhoff Lie and the already retired Nina Haver-Løseth and Tina Weirather were there - and were absolutely thrilled by the ceremony. "So much love and fun at Ragnhild and Mathias' wedding," Weirather wrote on Instagram. The other ski aces were also delighted. "Grateful for unforgettable moments and beautiful people," wrote Joana Hählen.
Mowinckel herself has not posted anything on social media yet. But she still has plenty of time for that, as the Norwegian has been in skiing retirement since March. With her retirement, Norway's ski team lost a very important cornerstone: In her career, Mowinckel made it onto the podium 249 times in 14 World Cup races, four of them at the very top. The cheerful soul celebrated her greatest successes at the 2018 Olympics in Pyeongchang, when she won silver in both the downhill and giant slalom. The resignation has caused great sadness, especially among her good friend Kajsa Vickhoff Lie.
