Raphael Haaser sent Austrian skiers into ecstasy with his sensational gold medal. His girlfriend, who is also no stranger to the skiing world, was also happy.

It is the biggest surprise at this Ski World Championship so far. Neither Marco Odermatt, nor Loic Meillard, nor Henrik Kristoffersen, nor Alexander Steen Olsen won the gold medal in the giant slalom. No, in the end a sensational North Tyrolean outshone everyone. Raphael Haaser, who had never climbed onto the giant slalom podium in his career, was crowned world champion!

Driven by his Super-G silver medal, the 27-year-old drove a fantastic second run, catapulting himself from fifth place to first place. None of the big stars came close to the North Tyrolean's time. It goes without saying that the Austrian fans in the finish area of ​​Saalbach-Hinterglemm were absolutely thrilled.

A victory kiss from the ski friend

Even before Haaser was honored at the winners' ceremony, he made his way to a very special person. His girlfriend Fabiana Dorigo was cheering him on in the finish area. She comes from Germany - and is also a professional skier. The all-rounder from Munich also competed in the World Championships in Saalbach and came 31st in the women's giant slalom on Thursday.

After Raphael's gold medal, the two ski aces fell into each other's arms. And of course the obligatory victory kiss - caught by the TV cameras - was not missing. It was almost kitschy that all of this happened on Valentine's Day.

While Haaser was subsequently awarded at the winners' ceremony in the stadium, Dorigo - just a few meters away in the finish area - watched the scene, visibly moved. It was clear that this gold medal triggered a lot of emotions in the skiing couple. Dorigo and Haaser have been together for four years, and now they are on cloud nine in terms of sport too.
