Bad fall in Schnals: Concerns about ski talent

An Italian ski talent suffered a serious training fall on the Schnals Glacier on Monday.

A number of athletes are currently on the Schnalser Glacier to prepare for the new ski season. During training on Monday, there was a bad fall that ended up with Matilde Lorenzi being hospitalized in Bolzano.

As the Italian news agency ANSA reports, Lorenzi had a bad fall during training on the Grawand slope. After her skis were pulled apart, the 19-year-old lost contact with the ground and hit her face with full force on the rock-hard slope. She then slid off the slope before receiving first aid from the trainers. The training was stopped.

Examinations in the Bozen hospital

The severity of Lorenzi's injuries is not yet known. The young Italian, who won two Italian championship titles in the junior Super-G categories in the spring, was taken to the hospital in Bolzano by rescue helicopter. The Italian winter sports association FISI says that Lorenzi is currently being examined in Bolzano.

The Carabinieri of Schnals and Wolkenstein have begun investigating the circumstances of the accident. According to initial information, however, all safety measures were observed.
