Deeply shocked Innerhofer: “It makes no sense”

The accidental death of Matteo Franzoso has caused great shock in Italy's skiing world. Christof Innerhofer, in particular, expressed his deep shock in an emotional Instagram post.

"I've experienced a lot in my career, but not this: endless pain." These words begin Christof Innerhofer's post on social media. The veteran posted a photo of himself with tear-filled eyes. The exceptional athlete from Gais is after the death of his teammate Matteo Franzoso devastated. The 40-year-old and several other members of Italy's ski team have already begun their journey home from the training camp in Chile.

In his Instagram post, Innerhofer describes the dramatic moment of the fall, which he witnessed on a chairlift. "When I saw where you fell, where help was being provided, the torn-up fence, and you on the other side, I was completely beside myself because I feared the extent of your injuries," said the Pustertal native. "What a tragedy to lose such a friend."

"In the days that followed," says Innerhofer, "I saw the empty chair at the table: It didn't seem real to me. Those were the hardest days I've experienced as an athlete, and that's why I returned home—out of respect and because it didn't make sense for me to continue."

Innerhofer remembers his colleague Franzoso with emotional words: "Matteo, I will always remember you for our conversations, for the positivity and cheerfulness you brought with you everywhere. I'm sure you'll be cheering for us from up there. Know that we'll be skiing for you too."
