Marcel Hirscher is one of the greatest ski kings in history. Now the Austrian is surprising his fans – by trying his hand at a completely new sport.

This week brought a bitter pill for ski fans: Marcel Hirscher will not return to the World Cup this season – and therefore will not participate in the Olympic Games either. After tearing his cruciate ligament in December 2024, he simply isn't ready yet. Austria's ski legend said in a video on Instagram. It is not yet clear whether this is a final farewell for the 36-year-old.

What is clear, however, is that Hirscher enjoys life away from the Ski World Cup. Although snow still plays a central role. On Sunday, the eight-time overall World Cup winner posted photos and videos on his Instagram account showing him on the ski slopes – but with a snowboard under his feet. "Sometimes you have to try something new," the ski superstar wrote.

Hirscher had a blast on the unfamiliar surface – even if he did manage a bit of a crash landing in the snow. The post garnered enthusiastic comments not only from fans, but also from some Austrian snowboarding stars like Benjamin Karl and Arvid Auner.
