The slalom in snowy Åre on Sunday was an emotional story. An emotional story in which the Swiss Elena Stoffel was the main character. The 28-year-old swung off at the finish after the first run and knew after finishing 32nd: That was my last World Cup race. While one athlete after another crossed the finish line behind her, the Swiss announced her retirement from skiing in tears.
"In the last few weeks I realised that the fire in me for competitive sport is no longer as strong as it used to be. Yesterday I informed the coaches about my decision. Now I am relieved, but also a little sad," she explains to View her surprise resignation.

Stoffel has competed in 64 World Cup races in her career, and made it into the top 15 five times. But now she has run out of energy. The constant battle for points and to stay in the squad has left its mark. "Ultimately, you are always reduced to the results. That is not a criticism, that is how it has to be in competitive sport. But for me, that was less and less appropriate," says Stoffel.
Now the studies await
A new life is now beginning for the Swiss woman, far away from the World Cup slopes. She now wants to complete her degree in business administration. "I don't know where I will work after that. But this degree will open many doors for me," says Stoffel. The fact that the 28-year-old was popular in the ski scene is shown not only by the many selfies she posted with other skiers on Instagram, but also by the numerous warm comments on her resignation.
