End of the season: World champion Schmid tears his cruciate ligament again

For Germany’s best giant slalom skier Alexander Schmid, the World Cup season has ended prematurely after another cruciate ligament tear.

The 2023 parallel world champion suffered "a complex knee injury with a tear of the anterior cruciate ligament and injuries to the menisci in his left knee" in a training fall, the German Ski Association announced. A cruciate ligament tear had already set the Allgäu native back after his world championship title last year.

The 30-year-old technical specialist will also miss the World Championships in February in Saalbach, Austria. Schmid had already undergone surgery on Thursday, the DSV announced. "Alex will probably be receiving physiotherapy treatment for a few more days as an inpatient before he can begin his first rehabilitation measures," said team doctor Manuel Köhne.

Schmid had a promising start to the season. Most recently, he finished 15th in the giant slalom in Val d'Isere last weekend.
